Sleep Center
For many, a full night's restful sleep is nearly impossible. And, we know how it makes you feel the next day and the difficulty it causes in carrying out your activities. Sleep related problems are the third most common complaint heard in physicians' offices, following colds and headaches. Sleep is a human need as basic as food and is essential for emotional and physical well-being. Those suffering from lack of quality sleep can experience irritability, depression, lack of concentration, lost productivity and automobile or workplace accidents.
| Common Sleep Disorders include the following: |
 |
| Obstructive Sleep Apnea: |
| Don't assume that the irritating snoring of someone you love is just normal. It can be a symptom of a life-threatening disorder where a person actually stops breathing during sleep. Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) can also add to extreme sleepiness during the day and may contribute to high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke or even heart failure. Snoring indicates that the airway is not fully open, and sleep specialists are now able to diagnose breathing problems that interrupt sleep in the early treatable stages. |
 |
| Chronic Insomnia: |
| Insomnia is not a disease. However, it is a symptom of other medical or behavioral problems resulting in the inability to fall asleep, stay asleep or achieve restful sleep. It can be caused by stress, worry, excitement, anxiety or even depression. Most cases of insomnia are treatable although many people are not aware that there is medical help for this condition. |
 |
| Restless Leg Syndrome: |
| Persons with Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) explain that they have "creepy, crawly" feelings in their legs while they are lying still or even sitting, particularly at bedtime. The constant need to move their legs or stretch to try to get rid of these painful or discomforting feelings keeps them from falling asleep. Consequently, they are tired during the day and unable to function normally. |
 |
| Narcolepsy: |
| Persons with narcolepsy fight overwhelming drowsiness while awake and often fall asleep at inappropriate moments during the day. This is a chronic sleep disorder with no known cause. Other symptoms can include sleep paralysis, cataplexy (a sudden loss of muscle function,) or even hallucinations of vivid dreamlike experiences while dozing off. Lifestyle changes or medications are the standard treatments. |
If you experience excessive sleepiness and/or difficulty in initiating and sustaining uninterupted sleep, an evaluation for a sleep study may be ordered by your family physician or a sleep specialist.
| Common Questions: |
 |
| What is a sleep study? |
| Upon entering the Sleep Center, a team of trained technologists and physician will monitor and analyze your sleep study. The sleep study, or polysomnogram, records various types of measurements that identify different sleep stages and various sleep problems. This painless procedure uses devices that are designed to be as comfortable as possible. A physician who is a board certified sleep specialist will evaluate your study after it has been analyzed and consult with you and your primary care physician about further treatment. Ohio County Hospital Sleep Center is a specialty service whose professional staff has years of combined experience in the field of diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. |
 |
| Will my insurance pay for a Sleep Study? |
| Medical procedures performed at the Sleep Center are covered by most insurance organizations. The hospital will prepare and submit your insurance claim as a courtesy to you. Because some insurance providers require prior authorization, our staff will assist patients in contacting their representative for specific policy coverage. |
